The Barber’s Chair is More Than Haircuts — It’s a Safe Space

When people sit down in a barber’s chair, they expect a haircut. What they don’t always expect is a conversation that could change — or even save — their life.

Barbershops are unique spaces. They’re social, familiar, and built on trust. Over time, many clients share their stories, their joys, and their struggles with the people who cut their hair. A barber might see a client more often than their doctor or sometimes even their friends. This regular, trusted contact puts barbers in a powerful position to notice changes in behaviour and open conversations that matter.

Back in 2015, I founded BarberTalk because I saw this dynamic first-hand. I realised that if barbers were trained to recognise signs of poor mental health, ask open questions, listen without judgement, and help connect clients to support, they could make a real difference.

What started in barbershops has grown into something bigger. Today, that idea lives on through Here To Talk Training, which takes those same life-saving skills beyond the barber’s chair and into schools, workplaces, and communities across industries.

The principle is simple: ordinary spaces can become extraordinary safe spaces. Whether it’s a barbershop, a classroom, or a boardroom, people need to know it’s okay to open up.

Everyday conversations matter. A haircut becomes more than a haircut. A check-in at work becomes more than small talk. A simple “How are you really doing?” can be the lifeline someone needs.
